On the eastern edge of Yellowstone National Park lies a valley unsurpassed in rugged mountain beauty, sparkling streams, hidden lakes, and abundant wildlife (Teddy Roosevelt once called it "the most scenic in America"). Nestled among towering pines and sunlit palisades, Absaroka Mountain Lodge extends a quiet welcome to visitors looking for a "Greater Yellowstone" experience. Once you enter Gunbarrel Canyon, you're away from the sounds of the Yellowstone road, ready to become part of this peaceful area named after the Crow Indian's word "home place". You'll be in the midst of unspoiled country, in the heart of America's first national forest - the Shoshone National Forest - where deer, elk, moose, big horn sheep and even buffalo roam.

Your days and nights at Absaroka Mountain Lodge will be filled with adventure and some of the simpler things many times take for granted - the scent of the pines, fresh mountain air, the camaraderie of new friends. When these fun-filled days are over you will sleep to the quiet music of whispering breezes and shimmering mountain streams. Come and join owners Kerry and Theresa Boyd for a "Greater Yellowstone" experience.

You will be welcomed with real Western hospitality when your family enters the historic lodge (built in 1910). The lodge's two fireplaces create a cozy atmosphere for dining on generous home-cooked meals, visiting with new friends or enjoying your favorite cocktail in the Gunbarrel Saloon. Casual living and Western atmosphere await you in the cozy log cabins, each with a private bath and located along Gunbarrel Creek.

Enjoy horseback riding, or maybe you think you would but never tried it? Then you won't want to miss riding the trails from Absaroka Mountain Lodge. From the historic lodge you will ride on trails that wind through the towering pines of the Shoshone National Forest, along sparkling creeks and rivers, up to heights where the views are breathtaking.

Come one come all! The wranglers take the time to pick just the right horse for you and give you any instruction necessary. Previous riding experience isn't required at Absaroka Mountain Lodge. The wranglers will guide you and your group (typically from 4-8 people) on your trailride.

Choose a leisurely two-hour ride or spend a morning or afternoon on a four hour ride where a meal will be cooked for you on the trail. All day rides are also available for those who want to experience the remote backcountry wilderness. This is a great chance for the fisherman to get back into the pristine fishing streams.

Some of the finest rainbow trout and cutthroat trout fishing can be found here. The East Yellowstone Valley is truly an area abounding in fresh water fishing opportunity, for the novice or the professional. Just a few steps out the door of your cabin and you can wet a line in Gunbarrel Creek and try for that magnificent rainbow, cutthroat or brown trout. A very short walk away from your cabin is the North Fork of the Shoshone River where you can also test your skills against rainbow, cutthroat or brook trout.

"Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few of them are dirt." - Anonymous. Western hospitality awaits you at the Absaroka Mountain Lodge.
