Mormon pioneer Byron Sessions, this town’s namesake, was largely responsible for the Sidon Canal irrigation system in the area. A fence posthole unearthed a natural gas vent in a farmers field here, which —accidentally ignited — burned for years. Later, around 1906, the gas was intentionally tapped at 700 feet, and the Byron area became a prominent gas field.
