At the foot of the mountains of the same name, Big Horn was once just a couple of cabins that sheltered outlaws. Officially founded as a town in 1878 by O.P. Hanna, this was a much-needed rest stop on the Bozeman Trail. By 1881, it was the first real town in Sheridan County. Later, in 1894, it became the home of the first college in the area, the Wyoming College and Normal School, begun by the Congregational Missionary Society. The school had to close in 1898 when the students couldn’t pay the $100 tuition.
