Almy
3 miles northwest of Evanston on State Highway 89

Named for James T. Almy, this rambling town encompassed nearly 5 miles along the Bear River. At one time, the town boasted nearly 4,000 residents. The coal mines at Almy were deemed some of the most dangerous in the state, with frequent methane gas explosions, and mining disasters took their toll on the population. In 1900 the mines were closed by the Union Pacific Railroad. With its primary industry gone, the town whithered and died. Today, millions of tons of coal remain unmined, and some still burns in the shafts.
