Like many trail landmarks, this butte in the valley of the Black’s Fork of Green River, had more than one name. John Boardman, an 1843 pioneer called it “Soloman’s Temple” and described it as, “…of the shape of a large temple and decorated with all kinds of images: gods and goddesses, everything that has been the subject of the sculptor: all kinds of animals and creeping things.” The butte is said to have provided a spectacular backdrop for Mormon religious services conducted by Brigham Young early in July 1847.
