Union Pacific Freight Station
Downtown Rock Springs

The 1917 freight station serviced the Rock Springs coal field mines, which had a daily output of 2,000 tons of coal and operated for nearly forty years. It was the largest mine ever operating through one opening. Additions to the original freight station closed the street, and the railroad comany constructed a steel pedestrian viaduct above the tracks so residents could cross eight tracks dividing the town. Walk along the grass toward the train depot, and you’ll see the dates and names inscribed near the tops of the buildings across the street.
