Constructed to regulate rather than store water. Regulation of water flow in the North Platte River is of particular importance for power production, for full benefits for fish life, water quality, municipal and industrial water and irrigation.
Gray Reef Reservoir assures that releases can be made from Alcova Powerplant according to varying needs for power. It provides river flowage with a minimum of daily fluctuation.
The reservoir can store 1,800 acre-feet of water behind the earthfill dam which is 36 feet high and 650 feet long. The outlet gates are electronically controlled from Alcova Powerplant.
