Merritt’s Pass, so named when Gen’l. Merritt, Commanding Fifth U. S. Cavalry, passed through these mountains in September of 1877 upon a scouting expedition. This monument is erected in memory of Col. George M. Sliney, W. N. G., who served under Gen’l. Merritt’s command on this expedition. Col. Sliney was so impressed by the beauty and fertility of the Owl Creek Valley, as seen from this point, that he then and there determined to return and make his home in the valley. His plan materialized and on October 3, 1883, the Colonel returned and crossed through this pass accompanied by his wife and three daughters.
