The Duncan
Traveling from Atlantic City, a gravel road winds up Mill hill that levels
off & heads southeast. At the crest 1 mile south of town, a dirt road
branches to the right were the Mary Ellen Mine sits. Within 1 mile of
the turnoof, "The Duncan" comes into view.

In 1911, the first rich strike of ore was made, resulting in forty thousand dollars’ worth of ore being removed in three years. In 1914, the operation ran into financial difficulty and closed. Thirty-two years later, new owners made improvements, but only twelve tons of ore were processed that year, valued at a total of two thousand dollars.

The mine underwent another spurt of activity in 1956 when three thousand tons were shipped at twelve dollars per ton. During the height of its prosperity, “The Duncan” consisted of several dozen cabins, a small store, and a two-story dormitory.
