Dedicated to preserving the natural and human history of the West, the Wind River Heritage Center features lifelike displays of the Jake Korell Wildlife Collection and a collection of historic traps dating from 1804, from the fur trade era. The Korell Collection specializes in Wyoming wildlife including big-game species, predators and furbearers. Bison, bears and grey wolves are among the most popular exhibits. Colorful dioramas depicting the animals’ natural habitat serve as backdrops for the mounts.
Wildlife play an important role in the Wind River Valley. The area has always been a prized hunting ground. Historically, wild animals provided meat, fur, bones, hides, horns, and even teeth. Today, they continue to be valued both for their aesthetic appeal and for their meat and hides. The Heritage Center displays provide a close-tip look at these animals that have been so vital in the settling of the American West.
In addition to its wildlife displays, the Heritage Center houses an extensive gift store specializing in Native American art and jewelry. Locally made beadwork and leather goods-trademarks of the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho tribes that inhabit the Wind River Indian Reservation-can be purchased at the store. The Heritage Center also sponsors slide shows, lectures and Native American dancing demonstrations throughout the year. The museum is open year round Monday through Saturday.
